About Natfish

Campus Main Building

The National Fishing Industry Education Centre of TAFE (Natfish) is located at Trenayr Campus of TAFE, part of the North Coast Institute, 10km from Grafton on the North Coast of NSW. The Centre specialises in flexible delivery and has been recognised for excellence in delivery through a Best Practice Award from the Australian National Training Authority and has been a finalist in the NSW Training Provide of the Year awards.

Natfish was established in 1993 to service the rapidly growing aquaculture industry following a far sighted alliance between TAFE NSW and the Australian fishing industry. The Australian fishing industry had recognised the need for more systematic training for its workforce and Natfish was part of the industry's vision for improving its personnel's skills. The fishing industry is taken to include anyone involved in the catching, growing, processing and marketing of aquatic plants and animals.

During the last few years, the scope of Natfish has widened to include delivery of courses such as Seafood Processing, Recreational Fishing Industry Services, Marine Studies and short courses in a variety of related areas. Practical workshops and face to face classes for these courses are delivered at several campuses. The Trenayr campus has also expanded to include other primary industry and natural resource areas such as Conservation and Land Management, Agriculture and Equine Studies, which are also delivered flexibly.

TAFE NSW, long the State's pre-eminent vocational education and training provided, is the client's assurance of quality training. The National Fishing Industry Education Centre is part of the expanding and energetic North Coast Institute. It is committed to providing relevant, credible and accessible vocational education and training by face to face and flexible delivery, focusing on learners' needs. The Centre's courses are conducted by highly qualified teachers with extensive experience in commercial aquaculture and other aspects of the fishing industry.

The Centre contains facilities including wet and dry laboratories, workshop, training rooms, conference/seminar rooms and equipment, reference materials, catering facilities and access to a wide range of other training facilities in TAFE NSW and other TAFE delivery centres in Australia.

Directly opposite the Centre is the NSW DPI Grafton Aquaculture Centre, which has a large freshwater fish hatchery and 19 aquaculture ponds.
