Hatchery Course

Course Information

This short course offers skills in breeding and rearing Australian native freshwater fish through the larval and fry stages.

Duration

  • 4 days - student must already have industry experience or have completed the aquaculture biology and water quality components of the certificate II course.

This workshop can only be run during spawning season when suitable brood fish are available. Because of the similarity in basic techniques the workshop will use different species at different times of the year.

The workshops are run at Natfish at Trenayr Campus.

  • Selection and care of broodstock
  • Hormone induced spawning
  • Incubation of eggs
  • Larval rearing techniques
  • Preparation of fry ponds
  • Fry pond management
  • Plankton sampling and identification
  • Health management of fry
  • Harvesting and transporting fingerlings

The workshop will cover all aspects of the hatchery phase - spawning, hatching and larval rearing.

During the workshop you will have the opportunity to particpate in practical activities; handling and injecting broodstock; counting and evaluating egg quality; observing embryo development; hatching eggs and transferring larvae.
