The Certificate III in Marine Studies allows learners to sample major marine industry sectors while gaining practical, work focussed skills that a particular industry would expect from new employees. |
This course provides a pathway between marine studies programs offered in secondary schools and degrees in marine studies offered by Australian Universities. It is also designed as a means for university graduates to gain hands on skills in practical areas.
An overview of working in the seafood industry and marine biology and conservation issues are provided. Modules also cover water quality, communication skills and interpretation of weather conditions for the marine environment.
Students will participate in field trips involving kayaking & snorkelling, including several days at Hastings Point Marine Environment Field Study Centre to research rocky shore & mangrove habitats.
Completion of the Certificate III in Marine Studies also includes the following certification:
- General Purpose Deckhand - *note students must apply direct to NSW Waterways for this qualification after completing the required modules during the course
- Senior First Aid
- PADI dive qualification

Course structure
To complete the Certificate III in Marine Studies the core modules in group 1 must be completed. At least 300 hours of elective module/units must then be completed to complete the course.

Course location
The course is held at Coffs Harbour campus, Glenreagh St, Coffs Harbour, and laboratory work is conducted at the National Marine Science Centre.
Study Load
One Semester (18 weeks) full time. Attendance will be 3 to 4 days/week, with some weekend field trips plus a one week field trip to Hastings Point.
All Certificate level courses are Austudy and Abstudy approved.
